The destruction of the city of Babylon by the Medes and Persians. The prophet is terrified at the vision shown him—at the devastation, the ruin, the carnage (see Isaiah13:18). He is not considering how well deserved the punishment is. He does not yet know how that, in destroying Babylon, God will be avenging the sufferings of his own nation. Go up, O Elam; besiege, O Media; Elam (a region that merged into Persia) is summoned to go up against Babylon, and, combined with the forces of Media, to besiege it.
