After comforting and assuring Israel that its future will be bright, The Lord prophesies a message to the nations of the world condemning them for their evil. He addresses all Gentile nations, and He speaks to them as He calls upon them to defend themselves. This verse is an introduction to this whole section which is in Hebrew poetic form, presenting it as a legal contest between the Lord and the pagan gods of Israel’s enemies, the Gentile nations. First the Lord presents His case at length and then He challenges the gods of the nations to reply as Elijah did with the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel (I Kings 18:20–40).
