Most would know the opening words of Charles Dickens “A tale of two cities” – “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”. Possibly one of the best known opening lines of any Literary work. I can think of another that is just as well known …. The Bible – “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth”.
Dickens covers the time period before and during the French Revolution. The turbulent years, 1775 to 1790, focus on the two cities of London and Paris. His shows the lust for public beheadings on the streets and much more … He tells of a time of controversies and contradictions
The Period
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way–in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.
When I read the opening paragraph of “Tale of two cities” is just speaks of 2016 to me …. some 245 years after the time period Dickens wrote of. It just screams this generation … this day in which we live. A time of chaos, conflicts, death, beheadings, a time of despair as well as happiness, hopelessness, and of great hope (for some). The opening phrase would dovetail into this end times generation as the opening statement for the time period just before the close of the church age and the beginning of Daniels 70th week. – “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”. A time of good, a time of evil, a time of blessed hope for some and a time of no hope for others.
Dickens opening paragraph has a great literary value in painting a vivid picture in this day. The city or kingdom of Almighty God and the city or kingdom of satan. The tale of two kingdoms … Both eternal. The kingdom of Jesus the Christ and His bride will rule from Jerusalem and the kingdom of satan and his followers will spend eternity in the lake of fire.
We live at a pivotal time in the history of mankind. At the end of the Church age. Planet earth will soon enter the prophetic time of “Jacob’s Trouble”, all who follow the god of this world. Who follows the god of this world you might ask. All that have not received Jesus the Christ as their Lord and Savior. True believers of Jesus the Christ have already made the choice of who they follow. Rev3:10 tells us that the tribulation period will be a time of trial or testing. Those that have not made a choice for Jesus in the Church age will be forced to make a choice in the tribulation. Those that refuse the mark of the beast will have their heads cut off like in Dickins tale. It will truly be the worst of times … you don’t want to go there … and you don’t have to.
For Christians that understand the prophetic word and the times in which we live … it is truly the best of times. We have our blessed hope in Jesus the Christ and the rapture of the Church. We stand on the promise of His word. We see the prophetic word foretold for this day unfold before our very eyes. What an amazing time to live.
My thought at this point in time is that the church age could close at any time .. it might continue a year or two … however, time is short. We have time but a short time only. If you are a Christian … make the most of the time we have left … If your not a Christian, your playing with fire and it will be your eternal home … the lake of fire.
