The Trump administration is committed to prevented Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, a top administration official said Sunday, hinting that the U.S. is considering military intervention to prevent Iran’s nuclear program from reaching break-out capacity.
On Sunday, President Donald Trump’s National Security Advisor, former Congressman Michael Waltz, appeared on Fox News warning that Trump is “dead serious” about preventing Iran from going nuclear and that “all options are on the table” to prevent Tehran from achieving weapons-grade enrichment.
“I could speak to what the President has repeatedly said, and that is Iran can never have a nuclear weapon,” Waltz said.
“That not only would be existential for Israel. I think it would be existential for the entire world, because it could kick off a nuclear arms race in the Middle East.”
Waltz refused to speak directly to what proposals are on the table for preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, saying only that Trump has shown he is ready to take “whatever action is necessary.”
“How we get there, I’m not going to get into the details of here, but the President has also expressed a willingness to take whatever action is necessary.”
“All options are on the table, but also to talk to Iran as well, if they want to give up their entire program and not play games, as we have seen Iran do in the past in prior negotiations.”
“So all options are on the table, but I’ll promise you this: President Trump is absolutely serious, deadly serious, when he says Iran can never have a nuke, and certainly not on President Trump’s watch. They are an irrational actor that we cannot allow to have their finger on the button.”
During President Joe Biden’s lame duck session following the election of Donald Trump last November, White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan briefed Biden on possible options for military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, should Iran attempt to rush towards development of a nuclear weapon prior to Trump’s inauguration last month.
Israel is reportedly considering airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities sometime over the next few months, U.S. intel officials estimate.
