During an interview today (Thursday) with Syria’s al-Watan Newspaper, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of his own citizens, claimed that the US offered him full legal immunity.

According to Assad, the US indirectly proposed for him to leave power for any country of his choice that would agree to take him. In return, he would be completely immune from being prosecuted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in Hague. Assad also maintained that countries such as Qatar and Turkey offered Syrian First Lady Asma al-Assad sanctuary within their territories. In addition, he said that except for his visit to Russia, he has not left Syrian territory since the start of the civil war.
