A large fire has engulfed parts of Iran’s Kharg (Khark) island oil terminal in the Persian Gulf on Tuesday, Tasnim news agency close to the Revolutionary Guard reported. A photo published by the agency shows large plumes of smoke rising from two storage tanks.

The agency quotes Kharg’s fire department as saying that the blaze is in the petrochemical complex and started in the morning. Several teams of firefighters have been battling the blaze but as of 10:00 am local time they were not unsuccessful.

Tasnim also said that according to information it has from Kharg, 25 kilometers from mainland, the extent of the blaze and its possible damage is not clear.

Since July 2020, there have been many similar incidents in Iran’s military, nuclear, oil and industrial installations, and in some cases, sabotage has been suspected or claimed by Iran. The most notable was a mysterious explosion this year in Iran’s uranium enrichment plant in Natanz and later a huge blaze in Tehran refinery.

Israel is widely suspected of being behind some of these incidents, including Natanz and the assassination of Iran’s top nuclear scientist last November.

Tasnim quoted a spokesman of Kharg Petrochemical Company as saying that a spark caused the fire at 2:00 am local time in gasoline tank, but the cause of the spark is not clear. He claimed the fire is under control.
