U.S. ground forces captured a senior leader of the Islamic State in a rare operation in northern Syria on Thursday, the Pentagon said. According to defense officials, the operative was an experienced bomb maker for the terrorist group.
“The detained individual was assessed to be an experienced bomb maker and facilitator who became one of the group’s top leaders in Syria,” read a statement by the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS.
“The mission was meticulously planned to minimize the risk of collateral damage, particularly any potential harm to civilians. There were no civilians harmed during the operation nor any damage to Coalition aircraft or assets.”
Anther prominent U.S-led operation in Syria targeted ISIS leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, who detonated a suicide vest and killed himself earlier this year.
His predecessor, the first leader of ISIS Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, killed himself in October 2019 during a raid of U.S. Special Operations forces on a compound where he was located.
