Taiwan Foreign Minister welcomes Nancy Pelosi in Taiwan

China’s Vice Foreign Minister Xie Feng summoned US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns early Wednesday morning to protest House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.

China accused Pelosi of creating a provocation and violating the one-China principle.

In response, China vowed a military response to Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.

China’s government warned it would take “targeted military operations” after Pelosi defied its threats and visited Taiwan on Tuesday.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs published a statement, in which the Chinese government accused Pelosi of undermining US-China relations and encouraging the “separatist forces for ‘Taiwan independence.’”

Pelosi landed in Taiwan on Tuesday, the highest ranking US official to visit Taiwan since former Speaker Newt Gingrich in 1997.

Pelosi will potentially be staying overnight in Taiwanese capital Taipei, Fox News reported.

“This is a serious violation of the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiqués. It has a severe impact on the political foundation of China-U.S. relations, and seriously infringes upon China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement. “There is but one China in the world, Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory, and the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China.”
