Erdoğan, Merkel discuss Libya, Syria

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and German Chancellor Angela Merkel discussed the crises in Syria and Libya in a phone call on Sunday, state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

The pair also addressed the bilateral relations and regional developments, it said citing Turkey’s Directorate of Communications.

The phone call arrives following the signing of two accords, on military and one maritime, signed between Ankara and Libya’s UN-recognised Government of National Accord (GNA) on Nov. 27. The accords have further sparked tensions in the Mediterranean, where countries are battling for resources.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has also he would send soldiers to Libya following an invitation from its internationally recognised government, risking further discord with regional rivals.

In Syria, Turkey launched a military offensive on Oct. 9 to targeting Kurdish forces in the northeast of the country, which it sees as an existential threat due to their links to a decades-long Kurdish insurgency on its own soil.

The offensive also aimed to create a safe zone in the region, where Turkey plans to resettle up to 2 million of its 3.6 million Syrian refugees.

The operation was halted after the Turkish military and the Turkey-backed Syrian militias seized control of a 32 km deep region between northeastern Syrian towns of Tel Abyad and Ras al Ayn, after the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and its affiliates withdrew from the area following two consecutive deals brokered by the United States and Russia.
