US media outlets previously reported that President Donald Trump had demanded his European colleagues boost their pressure on Iran to seek a new deal concerning its nuclear programme, threatening to introduce additional punitive economic measures against the EU otherwise.
The German Defence Minister and head of a governing coalition party, the CDU, has confirmed that the US indeed threatened to slap import taxes on European cars, if Germany, France, and the UK don’t put more pressure on Iran regarding its nuclear activities. She added, however, that the triggering of the Iran Nuclear Deal Dispute Mechanism was not a reaction to US President Donald Trump’s tariff threats.
