Iran has threatened to carry out terrorist attacks inside the United States, utilizing sleeper cells of terrorists already present in the U.S. homeland, according to a report Monday morning.
A report by NBC News cited two U.S. officials who spoke on condition of anonymity, claiming that last week, Iran conveyed a message to President Donald Trump, warning that should he order the U.S. military to strike Iranian nuclear facilities, Iran would retaliate with terror attacks inside the U.S.
The message was reportedly relayed to Trump during the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Alberta, Canada.
The report did not provide any details regarding what kind of attacks the sleeper cells were capable of carrying out, or other threats made by Iran.
Early Sunday morning Iran time, seven B-2 Spirit stealth bombers began striking three key Iranian nuclear facilities at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.
The limited air campaign, dubbed Operation Midnight Hammer, involved 125 aircraft, defense officials said, including dozens of refueling jets and an unspecified number of fourth and fifth generation fighter planes.
U.S. submarines also launched a number of Tomahawk missiles during the strikes.
Hours after the strikes were completed, President Trump warned Iran that any attacks on the U.S. would prompt even greater American use of force against the Islamic republic than the overnight air operation.
“ANY RETALIATION BY IRAN AGAINST THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WILL BE MET WITH FORCE FAR GREATER THAN WHAT WAS WITNESSED TONIGHT,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account.
In another post, Trump called on Iran to return to the negotiating table and to agree to American terms for a nuclear agreement, including a total cessation of uranium enrichment activities.
