BEIRUT, LEBANON (7:10 P.M.) – Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei appointed a new commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Sunday morning.

According to a report from Tehran, Iran’s Supreme Leader appointed General Hossein Salami as the commander of the IRGC Forces.

General Salami is replacing General Mohammad Akon Jaafari as the commander of the IRGC; he had been the leader of this military branch since 2007.

The new IRGC commander is considered more aggressive than his predecessor when it comes to military issues, including confrontations with Israel and the United States.

Earlier this year, General Salami vowed to destroy Israel if they attempt to start a new war with Iran.

“We announce that if Israel takes any step to start a new war, without a doubt, this war would be the same war, which would end in its elimination and the occupied territories will be retaken,” Salami said.

In another speech in February, General Salami said Iran was “planning to break America, Israel, and their partners and allies. Our ground forces should cleanse the planet from the filth of their existence.

The new IRGC commander is no doubt more hostile in his rhetoric than his predecessor, but he is also considered more aggressive militarily.

The appointment of Salami comes just days after U.S. President Donald Trump designated the IRGC a terrorist group.
