In an interview with CNN, Iranian Foreign Affairs Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif claimed that his country only intends to use its weapons in order to defend itself and accused Israel of being aggressive. “They make statements every day that they want to destroy Iran,” he claimed.

During the interview, Zarif was asked about the concerns from many countries, including Israel, about Tehran’s nuclear capabilities. CNN’s Christiane Amanpour also mentioned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s statement from his press conference in Washington with U.S. President Donald Trump about Iran’s intentions to destroy Israel. In response, he said: “We have never used our weapons except in self-defense. For 250 years, we have never invaded any country.

Moreover, Zarif stated that Israel intends to destroy his country. “I’m sure you’ve heard the statement that all options are on the table. You know what that means? All options are on the table means that they are threatening on a daily basis to use force against Iran. We’ve never made that threat at any level of government or Iranian system against anybody.”

When asked about his people’s attitude toward the U.S. in light of the anti-American slogans heard at recent rallies, the Iranian minister explained that the attitude changed once Trump entered the White House. According to him, the Iranians believed that the U.S. respected them but simply had some differences with the Iranian government. However, the Trump administration insulted the Iranians with his immigration and travel ban.

“You cannot find an Iranian who has committed a single act of terror against Americans,” he stated. “Iran has always condemned every single terrorist incident in the United States since 9/11.”
