The Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL/IS/Daesh) terrorist group is allegedly planning an offensive to retake the ancient city of Palmyra in the eastern countryside of the Homs Governorate.
A source from the Syrian Army in eastern Homs said they have discovered an Islamic State plot to not only retake land in central Syria, but also recapture the key city of Palmyra in the process.
The source said the Islamic State knows capturing Palmyra would be a great benefit to them because the Syrian and Russian air forces can only carry out limited airstrikes in the area because of the historical relics that present in the city.
Furthermore, Palmyra is isolated along the strategic Homs-Deir Ezzor Highway, which means the terrorist group can carry out more ambushes against the Syrian Army.
The Islamic State has already captured Palmyra on two separate occasions; both times, the Syrian military had to send their special forces to help retake the city from the terrorist group.
With their successful attack on Al-Kawm last week, the Islamic State has proven that they are capable of carrying out surprise offensives and capturing territory that is supposed to well-guarded by the Syrian Arab Army and their allies.
