Treasury to present lockdown ‘exit strategy’ to government ministers

Israel’s cabinet members are expected to vote Saturday at 10 pm (Israel Standard Time) on the decision to impose a stricter lockdown on neighborhoods in Jerusalem, dividing it into seven separate districts.

The decision was supposed to be approved on Friday but the opposition of Interior Minister Aryeh Deri and Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Leon caused its delay, Hebrew-language outlet Ynet reported.

The Health Ministry was instructed to come up with an alternative proposal.

If the decree is passed, the lockdown will resemble that of the city of Bnei Brak, mainly consisting of the ultra-Orthodox community, in which residents will be allowed to go to work.

Jerusalem has witnessed the highest number of coronavirus infections with 1,821 cases, according to the Health Ministry — most of them in ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods.

Meanwhile, in part of the so-called lockdown “exit strategy,” high-tech, finance and industry employees will be the first to return to their jobs, Hebrew-language outlet Walla News reported.

According to a draft formed by Treasury staff members, the government is advised to begin a gradual release of citizens to their workplaces immediately after the holiday of Passover in order to prevent an economic collapse.

The document is set to be presented to Israel’s ministers, although the Walla News report did not indicate when.
