US rejoining nuclear deal can trigger cause regional nuclear arms race, Security Movement warns

A group of some 1,800 former IDF and Mossad officials penned a letter to US President Joe Biden calling on him to not rejoin the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, the Jewish News Syndicate reported on Monday.

The Security Movement NGO, which includes retired Israeli generals and spies, warned that the prospect was an “existential threat” to Israel.

The letter said that the group’s members were concerned by the White House’s course on returning to the 2015 accord, which former President Donald Trump withdrew from.

They criticized the agreement as “flawed” and warned that the US rejoining it would leave Israel and the moderate Sunni states, which regard Iran as a common threat, cornered up in a tight spot.

This would eventually result in a dramatic nuclear arms race in the region, they warned, urging Bide to follow his predecessor’s maximum pressure policy ad keep Iran under heavy sanctions.

While affirming its intention to return to the deal, the White House is not on the same page with Iran on how to proceed with the prospect.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has repeatedly demanded that the US must make the first step by lifting the crippling sanctions.

The US, for its part, has insisted that it is Iran who must first reverse its previous violations of the accord.
