Israel Suspected in Series of Airstrikes Reported Near Damascus

A series of suspected Israeli strikes is reported to have hit several sites in the Damascus area; Multiple Iranian-backed militias are said to have been killed.

On Wednesday evening, a series of airstrikes were carried out in the area of Damascus, Syria, by what is suspected of having been the Israeli Air Force (IAF). The areas targeted in the attack are hotspots for Israeli airstrikes, including el-Kisweh and Al-Dimas, which are located south and west of the major city.

Both locations are also known to house several Iranian-sponsored militias; three of which are reported to have been killed in the attack. Additionally, this series of strikes came just days after officials from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) visited the region.

Syrian state media, SANA, said, “The Israeli enemy carried out an air attack by means of a barrage of missiles from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan on some targets in the southern region.” The Israel Defense Forces (IDF), as per usual, did not comment on the strike, which came less than two weeks after the previous Israeli strike in Syria.

The state media also claimed that Syrian air defense systems responded to the projectiles, resulting in the downing of several.

Israeli officials have vowed on numerous occasions not to allow Iranian entrenchment in Syria. Back in November, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi said, “Our message is clear: We will continue to act as vigorously as necessary against the Iranian entrenchment in Syria, and we will remain fully prepared against any manifestation of aggression against us.”
