Nassif Hitti resigned as foreign minister on Monday, saying he joined the government on the basis of one employer, the Lebanese state. Instead, he found many conflicting interests and no will for reform. “If they don’t come together, then the ship will sink with everyone aboard,” Hitti warned. “Lebanon is sliding towards becoming a failed state.” He implicitly criticized Hizballah by calling for Lebanon to strengthen its ties with the “Arab community.” Charbel Wehbe was appointed to replace Hitti as Lebanon’s foreign minister.
