Nine Lebanese politicians are suspected of transferring a total of $2bn abroad in the past 15 days. Lebanon’s state prosecutor Ghassan Queidat was reported by by the national news agency as having asked for the help of the “the Swiss judiciary, the Special Investigation Commission of Banque du Liban and the Banking Control Commission of Lebanon,” to track down the suspects. The central bank of Lebanon is conducting a parallel investigation. Nearly three months of popular protests against the ruling government system have paralyzed the economy. The banks are closed most of the time and foreign currency depositors strictly limited for withdrawals. The drain of foreign currency is exacerbating the crisis and bringing the country to the verge of bankruptcy.
