The Leviathan gas field off Israel’s Mediterranean shore goes operational on Tuesday following the flushing of the rig which was underway on Tuesday. The process was delayed when the Ministry of Environmental Protection said that Noble Energy had not yet properly calibrated the instrumentation for measuring harmful benzene emissions. When those conditions were met and the ministry was satisfied that there was no danger to the populations in the vicinity, the process went ahead. Environmental monitors posted around the site have so far confirmed that the atmosphere is safe. But people living in the coastal regions around Caesarea preferred meanwhile to remove themselves to other parts of the country.
