MESSIAH IN THE HEBREW SCRIPTURES

Messiah will be despised and rejected and will be familiar with sorrow and sickness. Though innocent, He will bear the sins of His people who will consider Him guilty, stricken by God.

Messiah will be a descendant of King David. His Kingdom will be everlasting and characterized by righteousness, justice and peace. He will be a man and yet will be given titles that could only apply to God.

Messiah will come to Zion. He will bring redemption for all those who turn away from their sin.

Messiah will judge the Gentiles and utterly destroy Israel’s enemies. In anger He will strike the rulers of many nations.

Messiah will be One over whom the inhabitants of Jerusalem mourn, following a time of great distress. He will be recognized as the One whom they have pierced.

Messiah will enter Jerusalem as Israel’s king, riding on a donkey. He will be gentle and righteous and will bring salvation to His people.

Messiah is the means by which God rules. The people of Israel will hear the message of the Messiah, God’s servant, but most who hear will not believe.

Messiah will arise from the lineage of Jesse, at a time when the Davidic dynasty seems finished. The Spirit of God will rest upon Him and He will be a just judge.

Messiah will refine and purify the Levites just as the refiner’s fire purifies gold or silver. Then there will be men to offer righteous sacrifices in Jerusalem.

Messiah will be God’s servant, the supreme Israelite through whom He will display His splendour.  He will restore the tribes of Jacob and become a light to the Gentiles.

Messiah will be to Zion both victorious king and eternal priest. His priesthood will be after the order of Melchizedek.

Messiah will come forth from Bethlehem, a small town in Judah. He will have eternal origins and will become ruler of Israel.

Messiah will be a ruler. He will appear at a set time and must be executed before the second temple is destroyed.

Messiah will be a prophet like Moses and will faithfully speak God’s Word. Anyone who does not listen to the Messiah will be held accountable.

Messiah will suffer and He will bear the sins of others. By knowledge of the Messiah many will be made righteous.

Messiah will be the LORD’s Servant and will succeed in His mission. Though disfigured, humiliated and despised, He will be supremely exalted.

Messiah will be a child who will go on to rule over David’s kingdom bringing peace to Israel. He will bear divine titles and His kingdom will never end.

Messiah will be Israel’s king, a righteous branch from the line of David. Under His rule the remnant of Israel will be regathered to the Land where they will live in peace and security.

Messiah, God’s servant, will be marked by righteousness. He will fulfill God’s covenants with Israel and will bring light to the Gentiles.

Messiah, though initially rejected as unfit by those in authority in Israel, will be vindicated by the LORD and given the place of preeminence and supreme honor.

Messiah will be a descendant of Judah, a King to whom obedience is due. He will come before Judah loses tribal identity.

Messiah will restore Israel and rule from Jerusalem. He will regather the Jewish people and bring peace to the Gentiles. His law will go forth from Jerusalem.
