Saudi Arabia on Monday accused Lebanon of declaring war through Iran’s efforts and aggression through Hezbollah as tensions in the regime continue to escalate.

In an interview Monday, Saudi Arabia’s Minister for Gulf Affairs, Thamer al-Sabhan, announced that the government of Lebanon would be “dealt with as a government declaring war on Saudi Arabia,” following a missile attack reportedly carried out by Hezbollah from Yemen over the weekend.

Saudi Arabia intercepted a ballistic missile from Yemen directed at the country’s capital city, Riyadh, on Saturday night. The missile’s target was the King Khaled Airport, an investigation underway.

Saudi Arabia responded aggressively on Monday announcing an immediate, “temporary close [of] all Yemeni air, sea and land ports,” Al-Sabha warning against further aggression on the Kingdom, calling on Lebanon to not align with Hezbollah, stating, “The Lebanese must choose between peace or aligning with Hezbollah.”

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman then on Tuesday officially accused the Islamic Republic of “direct military aggression” on Saudi Arabia, addressing Iran’s supplying of missiles to Houthi rebels in Yemen and regional efforts. He stated that “The involvement of Iran in supplying missiles to the Houthis is a direct military aggression by the Iranian regime,” warning that such actions could be considered an “act of war against the Kingdom”.

On Monday, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir officially accused Iran of attacking Saudi Arabia in the Hezbollah missile attack from Yemen on Saturday, warning Iran that “The [Saudi] kingdom reserves the right to respond in a timely manner to the hostile actions of the Iranian regime,” and that Iran’s “interventions in the region are detrimental to the security of neighboring countries and affect international peace and security. We will not allow any infringement on our national security.”

Iran over the weekend accused Saudi Arabia and the United States of being involved in Lebanon’s Prime Minister Prime Minster Saad Hariri resigning on Saturday, Iran’s Supreme Ruler Ayatollah Ali Kahmenei responded to his resignation, claiming it was “done with planning by Donald Trump and Mohammed bin Salman, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia,” referring to numerous visits recently by Hariri to Saudi Arabia and Trump’s meeting with Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, as well as Kushner’s recent unannounced visit to Saudi Arabia.

Hariri announced he would resign immediately, stating “We are living in a times similar to the atmosphere to that before the assassination of martyr Rafik al-Hariri. I am aware of what is being plotted covertly to target my life,” referring to the assignation of his father, Rafik al-Hariri, in a Beirut car bombing in 2005. He went on to state “In recent years, Hezbollah has used the power of its weapons to impose a fait accompli… I point very clearly to Iran, which spreads destruction and strife wherever it is, and witness to that its interventions in the internal matters of the Arab countries, in Lebanon and Syria and Bahrain and Yemen,” warning that “Iran’s arms in the region will be cut off.”
