Report: 1,000 new housing units in east Jerusalem set for approval in coming days

Green light of project in Givat Hamatos neighborhood comes after Netanyahu vowed new construction

After Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced plans to build thousands of new homes in east Jerusalem, the Prime Minister’s Office is preparing to grant the green light for the construction of 1,000 new units in the neighborhood of Givat Hamatos, Israel’s public broadcaster Kan reported on Sunday.

The report said that the Jerusalem municipality is set to approve the construction plans in the next few days.

The plans take place on lands belonging to the state that have been frozen since 2014 due to the US and Germany objecting to building new housing units in the area.

On Thursday, Netanyahu said in a video message that “I have huge news today — we’re adding another 2,200 units to Har Homa,” adding that 3,000 units will be constructed in Jerusalem’s Givat Hamatos.

Following his announcement, the Palestinians expressed their outrage, condemning the decision and saying that it risks fueling further violence.

“Netanyahu’s attempts to win right-wing Israeli votes on the eve of the Israeli (March 2) elections at the expense of Palestinian rights will not bring peace and stability to anyone, and will lead to more tension and violence in the region,” said a statement from a spokesman for Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas, published by the official WAFA news agency.
