Posters featuring images of Iran’s leaders, heads of pro-Iran groups torn down, set on fire

Iraqi protesters in the city of Baqubah, capital of the Diyala province, have destroyed Iranian propaganda billboards installed ahead of the Quds (Jerusalem) Day, the Jerusalem Post reported Saturday.

The footage circulating on social media captures a crowd of protesters tearing down the billboards featuring images of Iranian leaders and heads of Iran’s regional ally groups like Lebanon’s Hezbollah.

According to the newspaper, it was not immediately clear who installed the posters in the first place; they did, however, emerge as a contentious matter for the local city council, which refused to authorize their installation in the first place.

Similar posters put up across the country reportedly shared this fate on a number of occasions, being torn down or set ablaze by the protesters.

Iraq has been engulfed in mass unrest for months, with protests held against government corruption and foreign meddling in the country’s affairs.

Iran, which holds a lot of sway in Baghdad, has already found itself in the protesters’ crosshairs, with Iranian diplomatic missions set on fire several times.

As the government moved to crack down on the demonstrators, pro-Iran militias have been implicated in the violence against the protesters.
