Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov criticised Europe and the United States for not taking back their citizens who were captured while fighting for Islamic State. He made the remarks during a press conference with his Bangladeshi counterpart Abulkalam Abdul Momen in Moscow on Monday.
“Our western colleagues from Europe first of all and from other parts of the world do not want to take international terrorists and members of militias that were captured by Americans and Kurds at the east brink of Euphrates,” Lavrov said.
“Americans threaten that they will free them, and this would be an awful crime, I think. The Europeans refuse to take these criminals although they are citizens of European states. The last I heard is that they are trying to persuade the Iraqi authorities to take them. It is not funny,” he added.
His Bangladeshi counterpart also noted that “terrorists have no religion, terrorists have no country.”
“They are a menace to civilization and humanity. So we think that any terrorist whatever they may be, our prime minister has appeal to the global world that we should all work together to wipe out terrorism across from the globe,” he added.
United States President Donald Trump recently called on his European allies to take back over 800 ISIS fighters that have been captured in Syria and put them on trial. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the return of potential terrorists back into domestic society is “a challenge for all of us.”
