Russian troops intentionally launched Iranian drones over Uman, aiming specifically at Hasidic Jews who were celebrating Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, in the Ukrainian city, Babel reported Tuesday.

Despite warnings from Ukraine not to make the annual pilgrimage to Uman this year for safety reasons, roughly 3,000 hasidic Jews went to pray at the grave of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov (1772-1810), founder of the Breslov hasidic movement.

“I have checked with the president’s office and was told that we will not allow tourists from anywhere to enter the country because we cannot guarantee their safety,” Ukrainian Ambassador to Israel Yevgen Kornichuk stated in July.

According to Babel, citing sources in the special services, over the past few days, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have shot down more than 10 Shahed-136s in the south of Ukraine. Some were launched from the territory of the occupied Crimea and directed to Uman.

The Russians were targeting hasidic religious sites with large crowds, the report said.

“Planned acts of terrorism against Israeli citizens are one of the conditions for Iran’s transfer of drones to Russia. As you know, this is not the first example of cooperation between two terrorist countries.

“Not so long ago, a Ukrainian civilian plane was shot down in Iran, apparently by mistake. But the interests of the Kremlin can be seen behind this case,” the special services said, Babel reported.

In January 2020, a Ukrainian International Airlines plane crashed soon after takeoff from Tehran’s airport, killing all 176 people on board.
