Heavily armed soldiers are deployed in Khartoum after the heads of the transitional government and other civilian leaders were arrested early Monday in a reported military coup. The whereabouts of civilian PM Abdallah Hamdok are unknown. Internet has been shut down in the capital while angry crowds have turned out in the streets in protest. Soldiers have seized Sudan’s state broadcaster in Omdurman and blocked roads and bridges leading into Khartoum city. The Information ministry said Monday morning that Sudan is facing “a full military coup” and urged the people to try and stop the military’s effort to block democratic transition. Deep alarm over the military takeover was voiced by the US Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Jeffrey Feltman.
