Syria reports Israeli strikes outside Damascus

Explosion reported outside Damascus on Syrian base used by Iranian forces; Syrian army and Syrian media claim Israeli strikes; Israel’s Defense minister in meeting with IDF and security officials.

Syrian media reported explosions from IDF strikes outside of Damascus on an a Syrian army position used by Iranian forces following Trump’s announcement Tuesday night.

Syria’s SANA state news network reported explosions in the Kisweh region, claiming the Syrian army responded to Israeli missiles with its air defense systems. Syrian media also claimed the Syrian army targeted and destroyed “two Israeli missiles”.

Reports later surfaced that the strikes may have hit an Iranian missile stockpile and that the target was hit by the IDF in the past.

Israel’s Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman was reported to be holding a meeting with IDF and defense officials in Tel Aviv late Tuesday night.

These reports follow the deployment of air defense systems to its northern borders by the IDF. The IDF instructed northern authorities to “unlock and ready” public bomb shelters and advised residents in the Golan Heights to “ready” their bomb shelters. It stated, “Following the identification of irregular activity of Iranian forces in Syria, the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) has decided to change the civilian protection instructions in the Golan Heights and instructs local authorities to unlock and ready shelters in the area.”
