BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:30 A.M.) – Under the sanctions imposed by the U.S. and Great Britain, no Iranian oil tankers are allowed to transit the Suez Canal if they are destined for a Syrian port, a Syrian military source told Al-Masdar News this morning.
The source said Iranian oil tankers are allowed to enter Mediterranean waters if the ship is destined for Turkey; however, due to U.S. and U.K. sanctions, the vessels cannot transit again if they dock at a Syrian port.
As illustrated above, the Iranian oil tanker “Stark I” transited the Suez Canal because it was destined for a Turkish port near the large city of Izmir.
Egypt has denied blocking Iranian oil tankers en route to Syria, but the Syrian military said it’s not necessarily Cairo’s doing, as it is up to the transit authorities at the Suez Canal.
The source said Iran and Turkey recently met to discuss this issue and potential ways to get oil to Syria despite these sanctions.
One of the ways for Syria to receive Iranian oil is through Turkey, but they will be required to pay a hefty fee to the Turkish authorities.
The Iranians are working to restore the international highway between Tehran and Damascus in order to resume ground shipments to Syria.
