Five people, four Jordanian police officers and one Canadian tourist, were killed earlier in a shootout at a Crusader-era castle in Karak

A number of tourists have been taken hostage by militants hiding out in a castle in Jordan, security sources told Reuters.

Earlier in the day a shoot-out between police and militants killed at least five people, including four Jordanian police and one Canadian tourist.

The Canadian woman was killed in a shootout between police and armed men who had holed themselves up in a Crusader-era castle in the southern city of Karak on Sunday.

Four Jordanian police were killed when a group of gunmen went on a shooting spree in the mountainous city of Karak before taking refuge in the castle, a police statement said.

Other tourists are believed to be trapped inside the castle.
