Trump praises China’s expertise on coronavirus after reconciliatory phone call with President Xi

The US and China are “working closely together” on fighting the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, US President Donald Trump said on Twitter early on Friday.

He also praised China for having developed “a strong understanding of the Virus[sic]” as it dealt with its outbreak, which until recently saw the highest number of coronavirus infections in the world.

The tweet followed a phone conversation between the US and the Chinese leaders, which, according to China’s state media, saw President Xi call for the US and China to stand united against the virus.

Xi told Trump that China “wishes to continue sharing all information and experience with the US,” said state broadcaster CCTV.

In the Friday talks, the two leaders seemingly struck a reconciliatory tone as the US and China clashed over the COVID-19 origins, with Mike Pompeo accusing Bejing of waging a disinformation campaign as it alleged the virus was brought into the country by US troops.

With the first cases of COVID-19 reported in China’s city of Wuhan, mainland China has long been the worst-affected country in the pandemic — but now, the US accounts for the highest number of infections globally, and Italy has the highest death toll.
