The ten elected members of the U.N. Security Council have called for a vote on Wednesday on a draft resolution demanding “an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza to be respected by all parties,” according to diplomats cited by Reuters.

The draft resolution also calls for the release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups, and urges the immediate lifting of all restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, ensuring its safe, unhindered, and large-scale distribution throughout the enclave, including by the United Nations.

The United States has not yet committed to vetoing the resolution at the United Nations. The U.S. Mission to the United Nations said it had no comment on the draft resolution at this time. Since President Donald Trump returned to the White House, no resolutions concerning Israel have been brought to a vote in the Security Council.

Ahead of the upcoming vote, Israel’s ambassador to the U.N., Danny Danon, stated: “While negotiations are underway to release hostages, some are attempting to push forward a Security Council resolution that will contribute nothing. Our focus now should be on pressuring Hamas, not the State of Israel.”

For the resolution to pass, it requires at least nine votes in favor and no vetoes from any of the five permanent members: the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, or France.

Throughout the war, Israel took extensive measures—such as permitting the passage of trucks carrying humanitarian aid, despite knowing that much of the supplies would ultimately reach Hamas—in an effort to prevent the UNSC from adopting a resolution for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, which would compel Israel to halt its operation in the Strip.
