BEIRUT, LEBANON (8:45 P.M.) – U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted on Tuesday that Washington wants to extend the arms embargo against Iran in order to prevent them from purchasing new Russian and Chinese fighter jets.

According to Pompeo, the arms embargo against Iran ends in October and this will pave the way for Tehran to acquire fighter jets like Russia’s Su-30 and China’s J-10.

“If the @UN Arms Embargo on Iran expires in October, Iran will be able to buy new fighter aircraft like Russia’s SU-30 and China’s J-10. With these highly lethal aircraft, Europe and Asia could be in Iran’s crosshairs. The U.S. will never let this happen,” Pompeo tweeted.

There have been several reports in the past year that have indicated that Iran is inquiring about new Russian and Chinese jets, along with their advanced air defense systems.

However, due to the ongoing arms embargo, Iran is not permitted to acquire these weapons until October, when it is finally lifted.

The U.S. has been pushing for an extension of the arms embargo to prevent these purchases, but it looks like their attempts may fail this time, as Beijing and Moscow have rejected the move.
