While he is a familiar face in Israel, the Thursday visit by Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, head of US military forces in the Middle East, makes him the first high US official to fly in since President Joe Biden took officer. It is also his first visit since the Pentagon announced Israel’s incorporation in the US Central Command’s area of responsibility. En route to the region, Gen. McKenzie echoed the new president’s praise for the Abraham Accords, adding that the US was entering a “period opportunity” to reorient its stance towards Tehran.
He will be meeting top Israeli officials including chief of staff Lt. Gen. Aviv Kohavi, who set off a furor on Monday by expressing strong objections to the revival of the 2015 nuclear accord with Iran – even with enhancements.
