The US Special Representative for Iran revealed that Washington is seeking a new comprehensive deal with the mullahs that addresses the Islamic Republic’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs, regional expansionism and detention of foreign nationals.

Nevertheless, Brian Hook qualified in an interview with the Saudi-run Al Arabiya television channel, “you can either work with the United States or you can work with Iran, but you can’t do both.”

The statements came after the US administration officially announced an end (as of May 2) to waivers granting numerous countries—including China, India, Japan, South Korea and Turkey, among others—permission to purchase Iranian oil.

The Media Line discussed the possible ramifications with Dr. Eldad Pardo, an Iranian Studies lecturer at Hebrew University in Jerusalem and research director at IMPACT-se.
