WALKING BY THE SPIRIT

WALKING BY THE SPIRIT
By Fred Trokie

The Purpose for Walking in the Spirit:
To provide a way for believers in Jesus Christ to have daily victory in regards to their Christian life, and to bring them to spiritual maturity so they may bring glory to God in all that they do.

Definition of the word “Walk”
Greek word “περιπατέω” (peripateo – Strongs# G4043)
Means to: regulate ones life by, and to live under it’s control.

HOW SHOULD WE WALK?

Walk Worthy of the Lord – Colossians 1:9-10
9 For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,
10 so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.

Walk In Love – Ephesians 5:1-2
1Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children ;

Walk As Children of Light – Ephesians 5:8
For you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord ; walk as children of Light.

Walk By Faith – 2 Corinthians 5:7
For we walk by faith, not by sight.

Walk In Christ – Colossians 2:6
Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him,

WALK IN GOOD WORKS

Ephesians 2:10
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

WERE DO WE FIND THEM?

1 Timothy 3:16-17
All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

GOOD WORKS THAT BELIEVERS SHOULD WALK IN

Be thankful (Colossians 3:15)
Be content with what you have (Hebrews 13:5)
Be doers of the Word (James 1:22)
Do all things without murmuring and disputing (Phil. 2:14)
Let us draw near to throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16)
Let us exhort one another (Hebrews 10:23-25)
Do the work of an evangelist (2 Tim. 4:5)
Give an answer of the hope that is in you (1 Peter 3:15)

SATAN DESIRES TO DERAIL OUR WALK WITH GOD

SATAN’S GOALS

Deceive – Revelation 12:9

Frustrate – 1 Peter 5:8

Stop Believers Growth – Ephesians 6:11-12

OUR OTHER ENEMY – THE FLESH

Two Natures

The Old Nature (The Flesh)

The Works of the Flesh Galatians 5:19-21

Now the Works of the flesh are evident which are:
Immorality, impurity, sensuality Idolatry, sorcery, enmities
strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, distensions
factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing.

The Flesh Opposes the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:17)
For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.

Romans 7:18
For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh ; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not.

Romans 8:6
For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace,

Romans 8:8
And those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

Our New Nature Spiritual Nature

2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

Ephesians 1:13
In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation, having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise.

HOW TO HAVE VICTORY UNDER OUR NEW NATURE

Be Careful How you Walk – Ephesians 5:14-16
14 For this reason it says, “Awake, sleeper, And arise from the dead, And Christ will shine on you”.
15 Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise,
16 making the most of your time, because the days are evil.

Notice that verse 14 says “Awake Sleeper”. This is an indication that many believers are spiritually asleep and they need to wake up. Once they wake up, verse 15 says to walk not as the unwise but as the wise. Verse 16 tells us what is wise, which is to make the most of the time that God has provide to us, and we are to make the most of it because we are living in evil days. Verse 17 reveals God’s will for every believer in Jesus Christ, which is to be continuously filled with God’s Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 5:17-18
17 So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit.

Galatians 5:16
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.

Romans 13:14
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts.

HOW TO BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT

Be Renewed – Ephesians 4:22-23
That you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, And that you put on the new man which was created according to God (2 Corinthians 5:17) in true righteousness and holiness.

Romans 12:2
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God (see Ephesians 5:17).

Colossians 3:1-2
Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.

We are to consistently set our minds on the things above which are found in God’s word. When we do, the Holy Spirit fills us and we can then start walking in the Spirit (Galatians 5:16), resulting in the manifestation of the Fruit of the Spirit in our lives (Galatians 5:22-23).

GOD PROVIDES THE GRACE FOR YOU TO DO IT !

2 Corinthians 9:8 says:
And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.
