What is Man?

Reflections From the Psalms

What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visit him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honor. Thou made him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet. (Ps. 8:4-6)

According to the writer of Hebrews, this Psalm is a prophecy concerning Jesus Christ. (see Heb. 2:6-8) Jesus Christ – the Last Adam – is THE man, which is why He continually referred to Himself as The Son of Man. Jesus Christ was the Last Adam in that He brought to complete fullness everything that God intended when He created the first Adam. He was also the Last Adam because in Christ, at the Cross, the Adam race was ended through death. Through the resurrection, the Adam race is NOT resurrected. Rather, in Christ there is a new race; a new creation.
The purpose of God in humanity was brought to fullness in Jesus Christ. Thus, it is only as we are IN CHRIST that this fullness can be realized for us. We need to grasp that – we are not given anything except it already be found IN CHRIST. Thus, only if we are IN CHRIST – and He is being formed in us – that all that is in Him can be realized.
God is forming Christ in His people so that we might be co-heirs with Him; reign and rule with Him. But again – we do not receive things in addition to Christ. We do not have a little throne, sitting along side of Christ, who has a big throne. There is one throne – we are to be seated IN CHRIST IN HIS THRONE. God has given us ALL things freely IN His Son – not aside from His Son.
God has a great inheritance for which He originally created human beings – it was stated in the beginning when He told Adam, “Have dominion…..” God has not abandoned that purpose – it has been carried out in Jesus Christ. God’s plan of inheritance is this: The Father – the only begotten Son – and all who are IN the Son.
