Benjamin Netanyahu Expected to Head Israel’s Emergency Government

Benjamin Netanyahu will remain Israel’s prime minister under the new ‘Emergency Government’; Gantz: These are not ordinary days and they require extraordinary decisions.

After over a year of political combat between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his main political opponent, Benny Gantz, the two leaders are expected to form an emergency unity government (also being dubbed the ‘corona government’). This comes after the split of Gantz’ Blue & White party and the ongoing battle to stop the spread of the virus throughout the region.

On Thursday, Gantz stated, “These are not ordinary days and they require an extraordinary decision.” In his statement on Friday, Gantz added, “I am at peace because I did what my nation needs. This is the time for leaders to choose what is right and put the lingering issues and personal scores aside.” No longer than just three weeks ago, Gantz was prepared to work with the Arab parties in order to form a government after vowing to his supporters that he would not.

Netanyahu will remain Israel’s prime minister for at least 18 months despite the looming “corruption trial” that’s yet to run its course. During this time, Gantz will serve as foreign minister. After 18 months, it’s possible that Gantz could take over the helm as prime minister, however, his decision to join with Netanyahu during this time may very well abolish his base supporters.

On Friday, US President Donald Trump called Netanyahu to congratulate him on remaining the prime minister.
