1 Kings 17:2-62 And the word of the Lord came to him: 3 “Depart from here and turn eastward and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. 4 You shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.” 5 So he went and did according to the word of the Lord. He went and lived by the brook Cherith that is east of the Jordan. 6 And the ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the …
A Hero Was Called Home
Dr. Mike Murphy He never preached a sermon. He never led a Bible study. He never taught a single Sunday School class. He never sang a song on Sunday morning that inspired others. But he helped bring more to Christ than all those who had filled each of the above roles in the church. He was a quiet man. A man of few words, who spoke only when necessary. He would occasionally joke, saying that he was not quiet, it was just that words were to precious to waste. By most standards, he lived his life in the shadows. But …
The Trap of Discouragement
The circumstances that trigger despair may be unavoidable, but how we respond is a choice The Trap of Discouragement Habakkuk 1:22 O Lord, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear! even cry out unto thee of violence, and thou wilt not save!Do you ever feel stuck in discouragement? If so, you are not alone. At some point, everyone experiences dashed hopes. Disappointment—an emotional response to a failed expectation—is the normal initial reaction. But allowed to linger, it can turn into discouragement, which hovers like a dense cloud. When that’s the case, there is no sense of joy …
“The LORD knoweth how to deliver the Godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished” (2 Peter 2:9).
The godly are tempted and tried. That is not true faith which is never put to the test. But the godly are delivered out of their trials, and that not by chance, nor by secondary agencies, but by the LORD Himself. He personally undertakes the office of delivering those who trust Him. God loves the godly or godlike, and He makes a point of knowing where they are and how they fare. Sometimes their way seems to be a labyrinth, and they cannot imagine how they are to escape from threatening danger. What they do not know, their LORD knows. …

The Dog Days of Summer By Randy Nettles
The dog days of summer are upon us. Here is how Wikipedia describes the origin of this common saying: “The dog days or dog days of summer are the hot, sultry days of summer. They were historically the period following the heliacal rising of the star system Sirius, which Greek and Roman astrology connected with heat, drought, sudden thunderstorms, lethargy, fever, mad dogs, and bad luck. They are now taken to be the hottest, most uncomfortable […]

Does God Let Your Prayers Go Unanswered?
In my fifty years of leadership and teaching at Dallas Theological Seminary I saw many dramatic answers to prayer. But I have also seen many of my prayers go unanswered. The answered prayers have built my faith, strengthened my walk with God, and given me hope in the midst of perplexing problems. But the silence of God creates tension for me. I find God’s silence difficult or sometimes impossible to explain. Is God Really Silent? Because of this tension, I have done a great deal of thinking and a great deal of Scripture-searching. I want to know why the same …
THE LANDMINE OF FEAR
Psalm 27:1-4 (KJV)27 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?2 When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.3 Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.4 One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days …
Behold, the Dead Horse
Pete GarciaJuly 8, 2019 Originally written back in 2013, I was always particularly fond of this message. I don’t remember it getting a lot of circulation back then, so I wanted to resurrect it and give it another go. I believe it is every bit as appropriate today, as it was back then. The main […]
