Reflections For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness. But unto us that are saved, it is the power of God. (I Cor. 1:18) You will note that Paul does NOT say that if a person thinks the Cross to be foolish (unnecessary or of no value — Greek) that God is going to punish them — by causing them to perish. Paul describes exactly what the mystery of the Church in the Old Testament was: that the Gentiles would be equally partakers of the Gospel of Christ. The Jews realized that they would be a light to the Gentiles (Isaiah 49: 6; 56: 6-7) but not that they would be equal with them! They thought that the Gentiles would be converts to Judaism.
