The Birthday Present

Dr. Mike Murphy As his dad entered the diner, he looked at his face as if he had never seen it before.  A face he had seen all his life, was a face he seemed to be looking at for the first time.  He noticed the gray and balding that was continuing to come his hair. And he noticed the wrinkles that were starting to form. Wrinkles, he was sure he had placed there through the years. His life had not turned out the way he had planned.  And if was far from the life his father had wanted for …

Storming The Beach!

Dr. Mike Murphy As we recently reflected back on D-Day, and remembered the sacrifice many made for us so we might experiencing freedom, I am reminded of a long-time neighbor of ours who was there that day.  Often, I would listen closely as he would recount the events of that day. I can still see the fear in his face as he told the story. And I can still feel the tears that would form in his eyes as he spoke of the friends he lost that day. As the small boats pulled toward the beach, he told me of …

The Full Armor of God

Ephesians 6:10-18 (KJV)10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with …

WHAT IT MEANS TO BELIEVE IN JESUS

John 3:16-1816 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. The apostle Paul told his jailer, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your …

“Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, ”— 2 Timothy 1:9

The apostle uses the perfect tense and says, “Who hath saved us.” Believers in Christ Jesus are saved. They are not looked upon as persons who are in a hopeful state, and may ultimately be saved, but they are already saved. Salvation is not a blessing to be enjoyed upon the dying bed, and to be sung of in a future state above, but a matter to be obtained, received, promised, and enjoyed now. The Christian is perfectly saved in God’s purpose; God has ordained him unto salvation, and that purpose is complete. He is saved also as to the …

God Has a Purpose for Storms

If you are in the midst of suffering, you can trust that God is using it for both your good and His kingdom. Psalm 119:71 71 It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes. Perhaps you’ve seen a TV show in which a distracted person is about to step in front of a moving vehicle. Then suddenly another character races onto the scene, tackling him to prevent a catastrophe. Stunned and indignant, the near-victim fumes and swats at his rescuer—that is, until realizing he has just been saved from a far worse …

The Danger of a Hardening Heart

Hebrews 3:7 – 3:11 7 Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,8 Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:9 When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in [their] heart; and they have not known my ways.11 So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.) The Hebrews who left Egypt had concrete proof of God’s existence and commitment to them. Yet …

Living Out Our Faith

The words we use in sharing our faith matter less than what we do and who we are Living Out Our Faith 1 PETER 1:6-96 In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials,7 so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ;8 and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him …
