  Paul describes exactly what the mystery of the Church in the Old Testament was: that the Gentiles would be equally partakers of the Gospel of Christ. The Jews realized that they would be a light to the Gentiles (Isaiah 49: 6; 56: 6-7) but not that they would be equal with them! They thought that the Gentiles would be converts to Judaism.
